Getting to Bamfield...Bamfield is geographically located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada's western-most province. Click on the map below for a larger view of southern Vancouver Island. If traveling by car, get to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island by ferry (http://www.bcferries.bc.ca/):
Travel north/north west via the Island Highway to the town of Port Alberni. From Pt.Alberni follow the signs to Bamfield. You will be traveling on a well-maintained gravel logging road for approx. 95 kilometers (60 miles). Tip: just follow the power poles! The village is divided in half by the waters of Bamfield Inlet. We are on the west side. You will arrive on the east side. When you get here, give us a call and we'll pick you up and take you across the inlet (this is a 3 minute ride). It's also possible to travel from Victoria via Lake Cowichan and Youbou. This route also involves logging roads, however not always as well maintained as the logging road from Pt. Alberni to Bamfield. In addition, there a couple turns which require careful attention to signage. Although not as well traveled as the Port Alberni/Bamfield route, many people use this route as it saves an hour or so when traveling from Victoria and other southern points on Vancouver Island. Please Note: As of July 2009, we recommend the Port Alberni route because the the road linking Lake Cowichan & Bamfield is poorly maintained, if at all. If you bring your boat, you can launch it at Port Alberni: China Creek Marina (phone 250-723-9812) or Clutes Haven Marina, 5140 River Road, Port Alberni (phone 250-724-6837) Run your boat down the inlet to Barkley Sound and into Bamfield. Go up past the Coast Guard and past the Red Cross Hospital. We're on the right, past the red Government Wharf. If traveling by passenger ferry: From Pt. Alberni via the MV Lady Rose or Francis Barkley - these freight/passenger boats leave Port Alberni at 8 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays yearly. During July, August and September, they leave Port Alberni at 8 a.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. They arrive in Bamfield at approximately 2 p.m. For more information call 250-723-8313 or 1-800-663-7192.
